Systematic Mineral Classification

Systematic mineralogy divides minerals into different classifications by their chemical formulas. Many mineral collectors collect or categorize their collections by mineral class; similar to the Dewey Decimal system for cataloging books in libraries.

The Old Dana Classification System:
This system uses a structure of nine classes that were subdivided into families based on chemical type. A family could be divided into groups based on structural similarity. A group could then be made up of mineral species and several minerals may form a series and a mineral may have several varieties.

CLASS DESCRIPTION SOME MINERALS INCLUDED NEW DANA
Element Includes native metals, inter-metallic elements, semi-metals, non-metals, and natural alloys. antimony, bismuth, copper, diamond, carbides, electrum, gold, graphite, nitrides , phosphides, silicides, silver, sulfur 1
Sulfide These are minerals that have Sulfur (S) in their composition in the form of S2-as the major anion. Includes Sulfosalts. arsenides, antimonides, bismuthinides, bornite, chalcocite, chalcopyrite, cinnabar, covellite, galena, molybdenite, oOrpiment, pentlandite, pyrite, realgar, selendides, sulfosalts, tellurides 2 and 3
Oxide These are minerals that have oxygen in their composition that is not part of water.  It also includes the hydroxide (OH) minerals bauxite, chromite, corrundum, hematite, Iice, ilmentite, magnetite, spinel, rutile, uranite, 4 through 8
Halide Those Minerals that have Cl (chlorine), Br (bromine), F (fluorine), or I (iodine) at the end of their formula. halite, fluorite, sal amoniac, sylvite alum) 9 through 12
Carbonate Those minerals minerals containing the anion (CO3)2−. Also includes nitrate (NO3) and borate (BO3) containing minerals. aragonite, azurite, borax, calcite, dolomite, nalachite, niter, rhodochrosite, smithsonite, ulexite 13 through 27
Sulfate Those minerals minerals containing the anion (SO4)2− anglesite, anhydrite, barite, celestine, crocoite, chromate, gypsum, molybdate, xelenate, xulfite, tellurate, tungstate 28 through 36
Phosphate Includes any mineral with a tetrahedral unit (AO4 3-) where A can be Phosphorus (P), Antimony (Sb), Arsenic (As) or Vanadium (V). apatite, autunite, turquoise, nanadinite, nariscite, wavellite 37 through 49
Organic Minerals in which biogenicl processes have been a part of their genesis or origin. abelsonite, amber, carpathite, evenkite, fichtelite, mellite, moolooite, pearl, whewellite 50
Silicate Includes minerals composed largely of silicon and oxygen, having the (SiO2) , with the addition of ions such as aluminum, magnesium, iron, and calcium. amphiboles, aquamarine, berlys, emerald, feldspars, garnets, goshenite, jade, kunzite, kyanite, micas, olivines, pyroxenes, quartz, sodalite, talc, topaz, tourmalines, staurolite, zeolites 51through 58

The New Dana System:
Based on Dana's New Mineralogy1, ituses classes based on composition that are further broken down into types, groups, and finally the mineral. A new Dana classification number would look like 02.08.01.01, the classification for Galena where:

  • 02 Is the number representing the Sulfide Class
  • 08 Are those types of sulfides that include Selenides and Tellurides where AmBnXp, with (m+n):p=1:1
  • 01 Represents the Galena Group
  • 01 Is the number for the mineral Galena.

CLASS 01: NATIVE ELEMENTS - minerals made of only one element and includes metals, non-metals and semi-metals.
